Since I've been in Hong Kong, I haven't really sampled too much of the local cuisine. So this time we set out into Hung Hom to try a typical Hong Kong cafe for lunch.
Although we walked by a Cafe De Coral, a chain of Hong Kong cafes, I wanted something a bit more "local". Cheung Wing cafe is situated in a pretty popular alley in Hung Hom, and they have a large selection of food for High Tea. Basically after 2:00 PM, most cafes will serve a variety of menu items at a discount.
Since the High Tea menu was completely in Chinese, it made ordering a bit more difficult. I ended up with the stir fried beef ramen, and El had preserved vegetables over rice noodle soup. Both meals came with a drink. Although the meal wasn't the greatest, it was very inexpensive: total = HK $24/person ($3.05 USD/person). I don't think there's any place in the States that you can get a decent sized meal with drink + tax and tip for $3.05.

After lunch, we walked around Whampoa to digest. Although there are some interesting sights in Whampoa, such as, "the Boat" that sits right in the middle of the city; Whampoa is more of a local town than a tourist haven like Tsim Sha Tsui (TST). We ended up exploring a 4 floor food court with some tasty looking seafood, as well as, the local mall which has all the Hong Kong chain stores, but none of the boutique shops. It was just good to go out and get some sun.

It's sort of strange, but one of the highlights of coming the Hong Kong is McDonald's soft serve ice cream. Considering ice cream and almost anything cold here in Hong Kong costs more than it does in the States, it's amazing how cheap you can get some soft serve for.
It was so hot out that day we HAD to get a Mickey D's soft serve cone!

$0.30 for a cone is cheap!
$0.30 for a cone is cheap! Here's an idea for you, ala Rachel Ray's $40 a day...why don't you do your own version of dining recommendations for a day in HK for the budget conscious traveler (with side trips to other Asian cities as well)...Eric's $20/day or $15/day? $10/day????

heh i went to whampoa two years ago when i visited my uncle..
haha ... yeah not much going
haha ... yeah not much going on in Whampoa. It's a fairly small place, but it's got all the regular dept. stores and major food chains. Pretty convenient if you don't want to head out to TST or Causeway Bay.
close... $3.10 at Wendy's!
